SLL, a CIBSE division, is pleased to announce the publication of Lighting Factfile LF12: Thermoplastic lighting diffusers and fire safety in buildings (2026), now available to download free of charge.

Produced by the CIBSE Society of Light and Lighting (SLL), this updated factfile sets out the requirements relating to thermoplastic lighting diffusers and fire safety in buildings. It recognises the relevant Approved Documents and Building Regulations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as the Building Standards in Scotland, explaining how each addresses the use of thermoplastic materials commonly found in lighting fixtures.

The publication outlines the implications these regulations may have for the specification, selection and use of luminaires within buildings, helping practitioners navigate compliance considerations with clarity and confidence.

This 2026 edition is a comprehensive rewrite of the original 2018 publication, reflecting regulatory developments and current industry practice.

Lighting Factfile LF12 has been authored by Richard Caple MSc FSLL of Thorlux Lighting and forms part of the SLL’s ongoing series of freely available factfiles supporting lighting professionals across the built environment.

The factfile is free to download by all. Access Lighting Factfile LF12 HERE

To further explore the guidance, the CIBSE Society of Light and Lighting will host an upcoming #GrowYourKnowledge webinar titled Thermoplastic lighting diffusers and fire safety in buildings. The session will provide deeper insight into the updated Factfile, its regulatory context and the practical implications for lighting design and specification.
