In 1997, CIBSE Past President Richard Tully made a generous donation of £64,150 to CIBSE, with the intention that it will be used to “encourage the continued publication of good engineering practice in the profession of building services engineering.” The gift was established as a long-term investment, managed by CIBSE as part of its wider portfolio, ensuring its value would continue to grow and support the Institution’s mission over time.

Nearly three decades on, the fund has accrued approximately £87,000 in interest, bringing its current value to around £151,000. This sustained growth reflects both the strength of the original legacy and CIBSE’s careful stewardship of the capital.

Today, the Richard Tully fund continues to deliver on its original purpose in meaningful ways. Most recently, CIBSE invested £20,000 to support the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, as a founding member of this important initiative. This contribution demonstrates how the legacy left by Richard Tully is directly enabling CIBSE to advance work that is central to the future of the industry, particularly in addressing climate change and supporting the transition to net zero.

The Richard Tully fund is a powerful example of how a single act of generosity can have lasting influence across generations of engineers. It continues to support the development and dissemination of good engineering practice, reinforcing CIBSE’s role as a leading voice in building engineering.

It also serves as a reminder to members of the lasting impact a legacy gift can have. By leaving a gift to CIBSE, members can help ensure that CIBSE continues to invest in initiatives that advance knowledge, support innovation and strengthen the profession for the future.

If you are a CIBSE member and would like to explore leaving a legacy gift, please contact CIBSE Services Managing Director [email protected] to find out how you can help support the future of the profession and the industry through CIBSE.
