A CIBSE-funded PhD researcher at the University of Salford is inviting volunteers to take part in a listening experiment exploring how people respond to future sources of community noise.
Kathryn Salter, a PhD researcher at the University of Salford, is conducting the study “Understanding human response to community noise” to improve understanding of how different types of noise may affect people and inform future approaches to acoustic design and the built environment.
Participants will attend a research session at the University of Salford’s Peel Park campus, where the experiment will take place in the acoustics laboratories inside the Newton Building.
During the session, participants will sit in a room and listen to a series of sounds played through a speaker. They will then answer questions about their responses to these sounds using a computer. A researcher will be available nearby throughout the session to provide support if required.
The experiment will take up to one hour, including time to review the information sheet and provide consent. Participants will be able to take breaks during the session and can leave the study at any time without giving a reason.
To participate, volunteers must:
- Be aged 18 or over
- Be able to understand written and spoken English
- Have normal hearing, with no hearing loss or tinnitus
The research is open to people who are interested in contributing to the future understanding of acoustics and community noise.
