CIBSE recently hosted a webinar exploring the potential impact of establishing a single construction regulator, following recommendations set out in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 Report.

The report recommends the creation of a single regulator to bring together oversight of the construction industry and reduce regulatory fragmentation across the sector. The proposal could have significant consequences for the built environment professions, including building services engineers.

During the session, Sam Baptist, CIBSE’s Head of Government Affairs, provided an overview of what a single construction regulator could look like, how it might operate, and what it could mean for CIBSE and its members. He also outlined how CIBSE is responding to the Government’s prospectus on construction regulatory reform.

Sam was joined by officials from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Buildings Professions Team, who contributed to the discussion and shared insights into the Government’s thinking around potential changes to the regulatory landscape.

The webinar also included a Q&A session, giving participants the opportunity to raise questions and discuss the possible effects on professional practice, industry oversight and the role of professional institutions.

The session provided attendees with practical insights into a developing policy area that could shape the future of regulation across the construction sector. It also encouraged participants to continue conversations within their professional networks about what these reforms may mean for the industry.

A recording of the webinar is available below for those who were unable to attend or who would like to revisit the discussion.
