Get to know the exceptional finalists for this year’s Young Engineers Awards —the emerging leaders who are shaping the future of building services with technical excellence, collaborative spirit, and a passion for innovation.
What the judges had to say about each of the Student finalists:
BENJAMIN MOSS
Bachelor of Engineering, University of Sydney and Electrical Engineer, Intrax Consulting Engineers
"Benjamin’s presentation is both imaginative and grounded, weaving human-centred design principles with technical foresight. Practical examples such as passive survivability and hyperlocal consultation combined with visionary concepts like regenerative urban hubs make this a strong entry."MUHAMMAD IZZUL HAKIMI BIN ROSLAN
Civil Engineering, RMIT University
"Muhammad’s presentation stood out for its energy and clear personal connection to the topic. The use of real-world experience — from auditing 29 buildings to creating IoT dashboards and sensor networks grounded the vision of connectedness and emergence in practical knowledge."DAVID TURNER
Bachelor of Engineering, University of Technology Sydney and Student Mechanical Engineer, Aurecon
"David’s passion shone through in the video. His video is a strong blend of technical depth and engaging communication. His use of relatable metaphors and real-world examples made the concepts accessible and memorable."
What the nominators said about the Graduate finalists:
JAMES MITCHELL
Graduate Mechanical Engineer, Northrop Consulting Engineers
James brings a solid technical foundation and a thoughtful, practical approach to solving complex HVAC challenges. He understands buildings as systems and communicates seamlessly across design teams—from engineers to architects and sustainability consultants—to drive integrated outcomes.
He’s collaborative, curious, and always thinking beyond his own discipline. A true ambassador for where our industry is headed.CONOR ROCKWELL
Graduate Mechanical Engineer, WSP
It's a privilege to work with Conor as his industry sponsor for his thesis that investigates the impact of system selection on embodied carbon. This research has been used to inform ongoing real-world design. We are very grateful to Conor for his diligence and technical knowledge and for assisting in applying his academic research to inform industry design.”
Conor is very aware of the responsibility that comes with the role of a professional engineer. As an active member of CIBSE YEN, he’s helped deliver technical seminars that share innovative ambient loop solutions across the industry.
FINN VEENEKLAAS
Graduate Mechanical Engineer, WSP
Finn’s grasp of fundamental engineering principles is evident in his approach to problem-solving. He consistently asks insightful, relevant questions and is able to distil complex mechanical concepts into clear, concise explanations that resonate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Finn has taken on the State committee lead of WSP’s Emerging Professionals Network, whereby organising events that enable ongoing development of fellow young engineers through discussion with industry leaders, team-based collaboration and critical early career networking.
What their nominees had to say about Young Engineer finalists:
SHAKIL KARSAN
