National Mentoring Day, celebrated annually on 27 October, is a moment to recognise the power of mentoring in supporting personal and professional growth. Established to raise awareness of the benefits of mentoring, the day encourages individuals and organisations to share their knowledge and experience to help others achieve their potential.
At CIBSE, mentoring plays a vital role in supporting the professional development of our community. Our CIBSE Mentoring programme is designed to match experienced professionals with mentees based on their expertise and skills, creating valuable opportunities for guidance, learning and growth.
Aligned with CIBSE’s commitment to supporting members at every stage of their careers, our online mentoring platform is open to both mentees seeking support and mentors who wish to share their knowledge with the next generation of building services engineers. The platform also provides a range of resources, advice and guidance to help participants make the most of their mentoring experience.
Through CIBSE Mentoring, mentees benefit from:
-
Support and encouragement from an adviser outside their immediate workplace, offering feedback to build self-confidence and helping to find solutions to new challenges.
-
Access to a network of expertise, enabling them to deepen their understanding of the profession and gain insights into how to develop and grow their careers.
This focus on mentorship is closely aligned with the CIBSE Presidential theme, set by 2025/2026 CIBSE President Vince Arnold, of “Paying it Forward.” Mentoring embodies this principle by encouraging experienced professionals to invest their time and expertise to support and inspire those following in their footsteps, strengthening our community and ensuring a thriving future for the building services profession.
On this National Mentoring Day, we encourage CIBSE members to consider how they might take part, whether by seeking guidance as a mentee, or sharing their experience as a mentor, to continue shaping the future of our industry together.
