Chris Skidmore MP, who led the Independent Net Zero Review, and authored the resulting Mission Zero report, has been confirmed as guest speaker at this year’s CIBSE Building Performance Awards, taking place in London on 1 March 2023.

The awards provide an opportunity for attendees to hear Mr Skidmore share his insights on net zero as a gateway to UK growth.

The CIBSE Building Performance Awards recognise and celebrate excellence in building performance and highlight the vital role of building services engineers in delivering net zero by 2050.

Mr Skidmore’s Net Zero Review calls for adherence to three key principles, swift action, stable policy and finance, and place-based approach. It includes 129 recommendations covering areas including the accelerated deployment of renewables, the transition away from fossil fuelled power and heat, and transformation of the grid.

The resulting report is the result of UK-wide engagement, with Mr Skidmore and his team at the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) gathering over 1800 pieces of written evidence, including evidence from CIBSE, and consulting with a diverse range of stakeholders, including investors, industry, and experts in different fields.

The Net Zero Review and its’ recommendations have been received positively, with broad support around the compatibility of net zero and UK economic growth. Mr Skidmore is also supportive of the ongoing work to develop the UK’s first Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, being driven by a cross-industry coalition, which includes CIBSE.

“I look forward to hearing from Mr Skidmore. His Net Zero review focuses on driving delivery and examining the infrastructure, governance, and skills needed. The insight and expertise of CIBSE members is vital to the transition to net zero and we look forward to working more closely with Mr Skidmore and the government to meet the 2050 target. These Awards celebrate those people, projects and products that drive better building performance.” Kevin Mitchell, CIBSE President
