CIBSE is proud to announce that the CIBSE Flush Challenge has been shortlisted for The Engineer’s 2024 Collaborate to Innovate (C2I) Awards under the STEM Initiative category. This recognition highlights CIBSE's commitment to inspiring the next generation of engineers while addressing the skills gap in the building services industry.
Now in its ninth year, the Collaborate to Innovate Awards celebrate exceptional examples of engineering collaboration and innovation, with a focus on tackling society’s most pressing challenges. The C2I Awards are judged by a distinguished panel of leading UK engineers and supported by esteemed organisations such as Babcock International Group, Lucideon, and Schneider Electric.
The CIBSE Flush Challenge is a hands-on educational game designed to engage pupils aged 9 to 11 in the exciting world of building services engineering. By constructing a functional flush system using a specially designed 3D-printed toilet and pipe kit, participants gain practical insights into engineering mechanics while fostering awareness of water conservation and environmental sustainability.
Key features of the CIBSE Flush Challenge include:
- Practical STEM learning: Pupils build a working flush system, gaining hands-on experience in engineering design and mechanics.
- Environmental awareness: The activity promotes the importance of water conservation and resource efficiency.
- Inspiring future engineers: By engaging young minds in building services engineering, the initiative addresses the industry's skills gap and nurtures future talent.
Supported in part by CIBSE Patrons, the CIBSE Flush Challenge empowers CIBSE STEM Ambassadors to bring this interactive and educational experience to schools, sparking curiosity and interest in engineering among young learners. To become a CIBSE STEM Ambassador, please visit Become a STEM Ambassador. The scheme is open to all UK-based CIBSE members who are interested in volunteering, and no educational background is required to get involved.
Dan Costelloe, senior lead of this initiative and Chair of the Talent Pipeline and Apprenticeships Panel said: 'We are delighted that the CIBSE Flush Challenge has been shortlisted for The Engineer’s 2024 Collaborate to Innovate Awards.
