Julie Godefroy, Head of Net Zero at CIBSE, joined a panel of leading industry professionals to deliver a key session at UK Construction Week on 9 May 2025 at London’s ExCel. The session, titled “Setting the Standard: The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Pilot,” explored the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS) and its vital role in accelerating the built environment’s transition to net zero.

Launched in September 2024, the UKNZCBS provides a free-to-access, robust and transparent framework that helps unify the approach to achieving net zero carbon in buildings. The standard offers essential guidance on addressing upfront embodied carbon, improving operational efficiency, and aligning performance with the UK’s carbon reduction targets.

Julie was joined by:

  • Amrita Dasgupta, UKNZCBS Pilot Programme Manager

  • Joe Jack Williams, Head of Sustainability at Bywater Properties

  • Tom Spurrier, Sustainability Director at Hoare Lea

  • Louisa Bowles, Head of Sustainability at Hawkins\Brown

Together, the panel shared practical insights from the ongoing pilot programme and demonstrated how the standard can be leveraged to design, verify and future-proof buildings to meet the UK’s climate ambitions.

The session highlighted the transformative potential of this comprehensive framework and reinforced CIBSE’s leadership in delivering technical excellence and clear pathways to net zero across the sector.
