CPD Directory Guiding Principles

Our CPD Panel has developed these guiding principles to ensure all content in our CPD Directory meets the highest standards of educational value, objectivity and engagement.

Objectives

  • Define the learning outcomes.
  • Ensure the objectives align with the overall goals of the course or presentation.

Sound Engineering

  • Ensure technical content is presented in a clear, concise manner, avoiding jargon where possible.
  • Confirm the content is up-to-date and relevant to the audience's needs and interests.
  • Organise the content logically, with a clear progression from basic to advanced topics.
  • Include references to relevant region-specific standards (e.g. UK - CIBSE, USA – ASHRAE, etc.) where applicable, ensure the standards is current that includes latest amendments.
  • Provide simple schematics to describe complex system design, if applicable.
  • Clearly indicate where specific products or systems are not suitable or recommended.

Commercial Bias

  • Ensure the presentation remains neutral and does not favour any particular product or service.
  • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest or affiliations.
  • Base recommendations and conclusions on evidence and best practices, not on commercial interests.
  • Its acceptable to provide an opening introduction and short summary of the company (max. 2 slides), with the company logo used on each slide.

Case Studies (Recommended)

  • Choose case studies that are relevant and applicable to the audience's context.
  • Provide detailed analysis, including both qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Include comparisons to alternative solutions or approaches.
  • Emphasise key lessons learned and highlight any limitations or constraints encountered to provide a more balanced and informative perspective.

Duration

  • Ensure the presentation is paced appropriately to fit within a typical lunch break (when sessions are usually held).
  • Include interactive elements to maintain audience engagement throughout the session.
  • Allow for Q&A or discussion periods within the timeframe.
  • Offer an indicative time breakdown (e.g., 45 minutes of content, 15 minutes for Q&A) to aid in session planning and consistency.

Facts & Statistics

  • Ensure all facts and statistics are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Use reputable sources and clearly reference them in footnotes.
  • Provide context for the statistics to help the audience understand their significance.
  • Encourage the use of region-based data sources, suited to where the audience is located.

Course Notes

  • Include comprehensive footnotes that provide additional information and references.
  • Ensure the notes are easily accessible and understandable.
  • Provide links to further reading or additional resources for those interested in deeper exploration.
  • Ensure all copyrights are clearly indicated, and the slides are prepared for public domain use.

Post-Course Reflection & Feedback (Recommended)

  • Introduce a mechanism for collecting anonymous attendee feedback, focused on the clarity of delivery, relevance of content, and level of engagement. This would support continuous improvement and quality assurance of CPD sessions.
