Online Learning

We’re thrilled to relaunch our Cable Sizing On Demand course this year with exciting updates! The course now features enhanced interactivity, a refreshed, user-friendly design, and the latest content to ensure you’re working with the most current industry standards. Whether you’re revisiting the material or taking it for the first time, expect an engaging and informative experience that keeps you at the forefront of cable sizing knowledge.

Overview

For most projects, cable sizing is typically undertaken using specialist software. As per other industry software, they are designed to step the user through a series of questions and then output the results of these calculations in a variety of formats such as schematics and tabulated calculations.

It is important to remember that software is a design tool and cannot replace the need for knowledge, particularly first principles knowledge of electrical design. If the incorrect information is inputted into software, the output will also be incorrect and this may not be immediately obvious to the user, which can have significant repercussions.

Breakdown

  • Cable Sizing Overview
  • Protection Against Overload
  • Protection Against Short Circuit
  • Selectivity
  • Fault Protection
  • Electric Shock & Human Body
  • Voltage Drop
  • Network Analysis
  • Busbars and Harmonics

Learning Outcomes

The aim of this Cable Sizing Overview module is to provide background to the subject prior to progressing into the subsequent modules which cover the subjects in greater detail.

The learning outcomes for this module are:

  • Understand the principles of cable sizing
  • Understand the Wiring Regulations and their relevance to Cable Sizing
  • Understand the typical design approach and sequence
  • Consider types of cabling and wiring systems
  • Introduction to the Cable Sizing Template (which will be used throughout these training modules)

MyCIBSE Learning

CIBSE’s On Demand training courses are hosted via our online learning portal, MyCIBSE Learning.

Please note that MyCIBSE Learning requires a separate login and is different from other CIBSE account logins. If you do not already have a MyCIBSE Learning account, please contact [email protected] for support.

If you have completed a booking form, an account will set up for you.

Alternatively, you can set up your own account by following the steps below.

  1. Visit the Public Dashboard | MyCIBSE Learning.
  2. Browse the ‘Catalogue’ for all our On Demand courses and exams.
  3. Once you have found the right course for you, click the ‘Add to Cart’.
  4. After adding the course to your shopping cart, proceed to check out in the top right-hand corner.
  5. During checkout, you will reach the Account Information stage, where you can sign up and create your MyCIBSE Learning account.

If you are a CIBSE Member please make sure your membership is added to your account, if you need help with this please email [email protected].

CIBSE’s On Demand courses are ideal for learners who prefer a self-study, self-paced approach. These courses are not trainer-led, allowing you to learn at a time and pace that suits you.

Once purchased, you will have 1 full year from the date of purchase to complete the course.

After completing the course, you’ll receive a CPD certificate by email. You can also find and download it at any time from the ‘Transcript’ tab on your MyCIBSE Learning dashboard.

CIBSE online learning courses are suitable for those wishing to enhance and support their current knowledge base, as well as graduates within an engineering discipline.

Like any tool, you need to be able to qualify the results that are produced, and to understand the implications of the information that you provide. It is important that the user has good understanding of the following:

  • Electrical Principles - Understanding of the core electrical principles of overload, short-circuit and fault (indirect contact) protection and voltage loss is mandatory.
  • Background Knowledge – Understanding the supporting science behind the electrical principles such as the physiological effect of current on the human body will put the calculations within context.
  • Assumptions – Having the required knowledge to make appropriate assumptions during the cable sizing design process will enable you to make necessary corrections for practical conditions of the installation.
  • Cost Implications – Understanding the cost implications of different cabling methods will help you make informed decisions and keep to budget.
