This course is for the supervisors and team leaders who find themselves supporting apprentices, often without much guidance on how to do it well. It’s designed to give them practical tools, language and confidence to coach, mentor and guide apprentices in real workplace settings, alongside everything else they’re juggling.

We’ll explore how to have better conversations, spot learning moments and support apprentices with the evidence they need for their portfolio, without writing it for them or getting lost in jargon. The course also introduces helpful frameworks like Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle and VARCS (what makes good evidence), so participants leave with things they can actually use back on site.

It’s about growing confident, capable apprentices and confident, capable supervisors who know they’re doing a good job and can see the difference they’re making.
The course can be tailored to reflect the most relevant apprenticeship standards for your audience, such as the Level 3 Building Services Engineering Technician or Level 6 Design Engineer. Participants will explore real-world tasks and learning moments aligned to these roles, ensuring the course is both practical and sector-specific.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

 • Recognise the difference between coaching, mentoring and guiding, and know when to use each approach
 • Use active listening and powerful questions to support apprentice development
 • Spot learning opportunities in everyday tasks and link them to apprenticeship standards
 • Apply Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle to help apprentices reflect and grow in confidence
 • Understand what makes good evidence using the VARCS model
 • Write clear, supportive witness statements that contribute to the apprentice’s portfolio
 • Create the right conditions for learning by building trust, safety and positive working relationships.

This course is for team leaders, supervisors and engineers who support apprentices as part of their day-to-day role. It’s especially useful for those who are new to people management, unfamiliar with apprenticeship standards, or finding it hard to balance delivery pressures with giving apprentices the time and support they need.

Whether they’ve been supporting apprentices for years or are stepping into it for the first time, this course will help them feel more confident in how they show up as a mentor, coach and guide.

Why this Training is beneficial

This course supports CIBSE’s commitment to developing confident, competent professionals across all stages of their careers. It helps ensure that apprentices are supported by supervisors who understand both the technical and human sides of development, which is essential for quality, safety and long-term talent retention in building services.

By strengthening the leadership and mentoring skills of those working directly with apprentices, the course contributes to better apprentice outcomes, more consistent progress reviews, and improved workplace learning experiences.

It also complements CIBSE’s existing work on mentoring and early career support, and offers a practical bridge between technical CPD and the interpersonal skills needed to supervise and develop others effectively on site or in the office.
