ISO 50001 is an international standard based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. This makes it easier for organisations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts to improve quality and environmental management and provides organisations with the requirements for energy management systems. The standard provides an internationally recognised framework to manage and improve their energy performance.

In addition to the widely recognised benefits of compliance with 50001 such as cutting energy consumption and cost and reducing exposure to rising costs, the ESOS Regulations introduced in 2014 exempt energy use that is covered by ISO 50001 certification issued by a suitably accredited Certification Body.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course you will have an understanding of the following:

  • Plan and implement an energy management system to BS EN ISO 50001
  • Help implement Energy Management Systems to BS EN ISO 50001
  • Help Improve energy performance in a systematic way

Should you wish to register with CIBSE Certification Ltd, an additional assessment will be required and you will need to take the Part L 2021 Update exam. You may wish to take the Building Regulations Part L Course to help in passing the exam, however this is not mandatory.

In line with ISO 17024, CIBSE Certification Ltd is required to reassess the competence of its registrants when major changes take place in regulations and methodology. This is the first major change to Part L since 2013. Part L covers building regulations for both new and existing buildings and the changes affect anyone who provides energy advice.

For more information about the process of certification please visit the CIBSE Certification website.

Your course will be hosted on Microsoft Teams if ‘Remote’ or at our headquarters in Balham, London if ‘Face-to-face’. Joining instructions will be included in the booking confirmation sent upon successful booking of a live course. You will receive an email with the subject line ‘Welcome to MyCIBSE Learning’ from [email protected] once your place has been confirmed, where you can create a password to access your ‘MyCIBSE Learning’ portal. Please note this portal will host the exam only, which will be assigned to you on the day of the course.

Multiple choice questions only have one correct answer -candidates should note that some questions offer options for 'all of the above/below' or 'none of the above/below' so the questions should be read carefully. The questions will cover the whole syllabus, some of which is only covered in the pre-reading. Some of the questions will require good engineering judgement. Some of the questions will require a calculation. You will need a calculator.

The exam is hosted via the CIBSE Learning Management System. Each exam is timed and will automatically log the candidate out once the time has ended. The CIBSE Learning Management System has a single sign on system forcing the candidate to login with a username and password. Although the exam is 'open book' it is not designed to allow candidates to look up all the answers - material allowed should be regarded as reference.
