This course gives a practical overview of when and why non-potable water systems are used, set against the current UK water situation, including scarcity, flooding risk, cost pressures, and incentives. It introduces the main system types (rainwater harvesting, stormwater harvesting, and greywater recycling), including their applications when used alone or in combination.

The course will guide you through the core elements of system design, including components, configuration options, relevant legislation and standards, and water quality requirements. It also covers system sizing and risk mitigation, supported by lessons learned from real projects. Further topics such as heat recovery, remote monitoring, and the use of weather-based control for systems that combine harvesting with attenuation will also be discussed.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Recognise the need and benefits of non-potable water systems in buildings.
Select and design systems, including system choice, configuration, sizing, and risk mitigation in design.
Identify the relevant legislation, standards, and water quality requirements that apply.
