Core principles of hydraulic considerations in heat networks: focusing on definition, physics of fluid flow, how pressure is measured and characterised and the impact this has on component selections saturation pressure considerations, basic relationship (diameter, velocity, delta t and capacity), heat loss in a pipe,  pressure loss in a pipe, roughness & friction factor.

Key Considerations in hydraulic design of heat networks: covering pipe sizing using lifecycle cost approach, variable volume variable temperature control intent, connecting energy sources and thermal storage, connecting customers, static head and topography considerations (including direct connections to high rise buildings), neutral point, pressurisation and expansion, exploiting available pressure in non-indexed runs, pipework construction considerations in relation to hydraulic design (thermal expansion restraint – stress and fatigue analysis), pump selection for efficient operation (duty point selection, staging, resilience, turndown, pump cavitation (and NPSH), pumping energy calculation, compliance requirements under CP1 and HNTAS TS1

Distributed Networks: considering multiple energy sources, pump control for networks with multiple energy centres, options for neutral point control, distributed thermal storage.

Phased and Zonal Scale Networks: covering designing efficiently for expansion of networks over time (radial and looped), options for neutral point control, options for booster pumping, considerations for transmission networks, hydraulic separation of networks.

Water Hammer: what it is, what the causes are, what the impact can be. how to design for it.

Anthony Riddle

AECOM Regional Director

Dr Anthony Riddle is Technical Practice Lead with AECOM’s District Energy team. With a diverse range of experience in the decentralised energy sector and in energy consulting, Anthony brings both breadth and depth in understanding of client and project development needs and a perspective borne out of experience of project delivery in a wide range of contexts. I have worked in the energy consultancy sector for over 20 years.

I specialize in district energy systems, with a focus on waste heat recovery in 3rd, 4th and 5th generation networks. I have project delivery experience through RIBA project stages 4, 5 and 6 in the role of owner’s engineer for Local Authority and Housing Association clients as well as across RIBA project stages 0, 1, 2 and 3 in a wide range of client, technical and commercial contexts.
