Overview:

The Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) Training Programme is a comprehensive, two-part course designed for professionals in the built environment.

The Foundation Training introduces sustainable construction, life cycle assessments, and the regulatory frameworks that shape decision-making. This foundation prepares participants for the Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) Practitioner Training, which delves deeper into the practical application of WLCA, covering both embodied and operational carbon in real-world projects.

The Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA) Practitioner Training provides step-by-step guidance through the thinking behind life cycle assessments (LCA), alongside key international and UK standards relevant to WLCA, including the RICS Standard ‘Whole Life Carbon Assessment for the Built Environment – 2nd Edition 2023’. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the environmental and economic contexts that drive WLCA and learn how to report WLCA results effectively, presenting data clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. The course also includes practical sessions on how to contribute to live projects using your preferred software tool.

Developed in collaboration with industry leaders, this programme equips professionals with the skills to meet the growing demand for low-carbon design and reporting, supporting their organisation’s net zero goals.

This Practitioner Training is tailored for developers, surveyors, contractors, consultants, and their teams who are looking to achieve a robust accreditation in Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA).

Developed with the leading authors and specialists in Whole Life Carbon Assessments, Participants will gain practical expertise in how to conduct life cycle assessments and a clear understanding of the standards, policies, legislation, and guidance driving low-carbon decision making in the built environment.

Passing the practical exam, which includes conducting a WLCA, will equip professionals to stay ahead of emerging regulatory requirements and support alignment with the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard verification requirements.

The exam is 'Open Book' - texts allowed are:

  • Course notes issued by CIBSE Training

About the Examination

The examination consists of a multiple-choice test and an assessment. Please note that examinations are only available during specific open periods, which require enrolment.

We anticipate the first examination period to open in October 2025 - enrolments will open via a form one month prior.

Although the exam is 'open book' it is not designed to allow candidates to look up all the answers - material allowed should be regarded as reference. If candidates have not prepared thoroughly by completing the pre-reading and understanding the training course, they may find it hard to finish the exam. CIBSE Training must be notified in advance of any relevant special needs or requirements.

Best practice advice for candidates sitting an exam:

  • Find a quiet, well ventilated, well-lit room so you can comfortably sit your exam
  • Schedule a suitable time where you will have the least distractions (meetings, children, deliveries, etc.)
  • Check all your technology is working (computer plugged in, near WiFi hub, registration complete, etc.)
  • Put a do not disturb sign on your door, turn off email notifications, mute your phone, etc.
  • Check if there is pre-reading for the exam , if the exam is open book, and how much time you have.
  • Don’t get anyone else to help you with the exam as you are the one who will need the knowledge to practice.
