Principal Mechanical Engineer

Principal Mechanical Engineer – Liverpool - to £75,000 + Package Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer looking for a role where you can work autonomously, have independence, with support and work on genuinely interesting projects whilst avoiding the bureaucracy of a large corporate consultancy? We're working with a well-established, independent building services consultancy that has been operating for over 10 years. The business has built a strong reputation for delivering technically considered, commercially practical engineering solutions across a diverse range of sectors. It's a small, close-knit and very flexible business — the kind of place where people are trusted to get on with their work rather than being managed through layers of corporate process. The environment is relaxed and down-to-earth, with a genuine emphasis on doing good engineering and maintaining strong relationships with clients. About the Business This is a multi-disciplinary building services consultancy specialising in the detailed design and specification of building services systems, with a strong focus on lean, efficient and sustainable engineering solutions. Their approach is refreshingly practical. They don't believe in over-engineering projects and instead look at each building individually, using a fabric-first approach and considering energy performance, build cost and long-term running costs from the outset. The Mechanical team works across everything from heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems through to domestic and commercial water services, drainage, gas systems, plant rooms, boilers, heat pumps, chilled water systems, building management systems (BMS), lifts and other specialist mechanical installations. Projects One of the biggest attractions of this opportunity is the variety of work. Rather than being pigeonholed into one sector or project type, you'll have exposure to a genuinely diverse portfolio spanning: Commercial developments Leisure projects Residential developments Healthcare Supported living/care Education Heritage and listed buildings Refurbishment and new-build projects The consultancy has experience working within some of the country's most significant and treasured buildings, including cathedrals, churches, museums, galleries and listed buildings. That means you'll encounter projects where the engineering isn't simply about applying a standard design — you'll need to think creatively, understand the building and work collaboratively with the wider design team. The Role As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you'll take a leading role in the delivery of mechanical building services projects, working closely with clients, architects, contractors and the wider multidisciplinary team. You'll have the freedom to take ownership of your projects and will be trusted to use your technical judgement. You’ll lead mechanical design projects from concept to completion, producing calculations, specifications, drawings and reports, while working closely with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary teams. You’ll also manage projects and site activities, provide technical support, mentor junior engineers and help develop strong client relationships. Why This Role? If you're tired of the corporate consultancy environment, this is a very different proposition. This is a small, established business where you'll know the people you're working with, have access to senior decision-makers and see the impact of your work. It's flexible, laid-back and personable, but still delivers technically challenging projects for a wide range of clients.
