High Temperature Heat Pumps In Decarbonisation
Course Description
This CPD explores the role of high-temperature heat pumps in decarbonising heating, with a particular focus on existing buildings, legacy heating systems and heritage properties.
The presentation introduces the operating principles of high-temperature heat pumps, including multistage and cascade systems, and explains how flow temperatures and temperature lift influence efficiency and seasonal performance.
Attendees will explore the practical considerations involved in assessing and integrating these systems, including building heat loss, emitter suitability, hydraulic design, thermal storage, controls, refrigerant selection and electrical supply capacity.
A worked school retrofit example and a technology selection framework demonstrate how to assess project suitability, recognise potential risks and compare high-temperature heat pumps with alternative heating solutions.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
- Explain how high-temperature heat pumps differ from conventional low-temperature systems.
- Identify where high-temperature heat pumps may support decarbonisation in retrofit and heritage settings.
- Recognise the relationship between flow temperature, temperature lift and seasonal efficiency.
- Identify key integration considerations, including refrigerants, electrical capacity, existing emitters and system controls.
- Apply project evaluation criteria to assess the suitability of different heat pump solutions.
