Lighting: The retrofit revolution

The move to LEDs has been a major disruptive technology shift for the lighting industry, which has opened-up new opportunities as light source efficiency has rapidly increased. This CIBSE accredited CPD seminar examines the benefits and challenges of retrofitting luminaires with the latest LED technology. We will explore current opportunities, the case for energy and maintenance, as well as the regulatory framework and CE compliance. We also discuss the risks of VOC’s and poor thermal management when considering LED light sources.

Robust Lighting

This CIBSE accredited CPD seminar looks at how challenging environments are illuminated. We examine vandal resistance, adverse weather conditions, product construction, LED lighting, and sustainable product design. Product standards are explained, including IK (BS EN 62262) and IP (BS EN60529) ratings. We identify the manufacturing processes used to ensure luminaire durability. Finally, we will look at some challenging applications in detail. We focus on transport, community and public, custodial and secure healthcare.

Emergency Lighting for challenging environments — Updated for BS 5266 1:2025

This CIBSE accredited CPD explains why emergency lighting is essential, who is responsible under UK fire safety law, and how to design, verify and maintain compliant systems in demanding environments.

We examine BS 5266-1-2025, including its expanded scope covering escape routes, local area and standby lighting. We highlight the strengthened requirement for testing, documentation and 5- year photometric verification, along with wiring resilience measures such as two independent circuits for high-risk areas.

Participants will learn application definitions, signage requirements, points of emphasis, and the latest performance criteria for escape routes and open areas. We also cover battery technologies, automatic testing solutions (Self Test/DALI) and how to design for maintainability. The session concludes with practical examples of emergency lighting requirements across social housing, custodial, secure healthcare and rail applications.

Sustainable Lighting for Railway Stations of the Future

With Great British Railways (GBR) replacing Network in Rail in 2023, the UK rail industry is focusing on sustainable lighting for the railway stations of the future. This CPD seminar looks at how this will be achieved through the rail industry’s 4S framework: Sustainability, satisfaction (customer), safety and stewardship.

We will look at what GBR considers a sustainable luminaire, the circular economy and sustainable product design. How manufactures can aid safety measures and improve customer satisfaction will be examined and stewardship measures explained. The CPD will conclude with some rail lighting best practice advice.

Light That Changes Lives in Secure Healthcare Environments

Lighting plays a critical role in secure healthcare environments, influencing not only visual performance but also wellbeing, safety, recovery and operational resilience.

This CIBSE Accredited CPD explores how thoughtful lighting design can support circadian rhythms, improve mood and behaviour, and contribute to safer, calmer environments for both service users and staff. It examines the balance between therapeutic needs and the stringent safety requirements of secure health settings, including ligature resistance.

The session provides an overview of key considerations such as luminaire design, maintenance strategies, relevant standards, testing guidance and the need for a sustainable long-life design. The CPD concludes with a discussion of several real world applications.
