Marina and Silke Leontopoulos present their work on blue-light hazard from Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. The researchers investigated a potential hazard to eye health for people using VR headsets, as such devices are increasingly used in lighting research to create controlled visual environments for experiments with human participants. Fortunately, they found that none of the investigated devices emit radiation that exceeds the limits for blue-light hazard risk according to IEC 62471 (photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems). In addition, the work touches on a few considerations about using VR devices to simulate conditions under daylight.

The work was published in the Lighting Research and Technology journal as part of the Special Issue on Early Career Researchers in Lighting, edited by Eleonora Brembilla and Kynthia Chamilothori. The paper “Consideration of blue light hazard for virtual reality head-mounted displays”, by M Leontopoulos, S Leontopoulos, and M Knoop, was awarded as the Best Paper within the Special Issue.
