This presentation will cover the recently updated requirements of CIBSE TM59 (2026).

It will explain the content of the TM59 and the major updates in the 2026 edition. It will: explain the background and reasoning for the TM59 updates; show the results of overheating assessments and the impact of heat mitigation measures; and illustrate the extent and severity of overheating across the UK.

Led by Kevin Lomas (BSc, PhD, DSc, FCIBSE, MEI)

Emeritus Professor of Building Simulation in the Department of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering at Loughborough University and a member of the Building Energy Research Group. He has a long-standing interest, built up over 40 years, in the design, modelling and post-occupancy performance of domestic and non-domestic buildings.

As a consultant he has advised architects and engineers on the design of large, naturally ventilated public buildings.

In the last 14 years, his research has focussed on overheating in buildings. He has led large-scale monitoring studies, experiments in full-size test houses, dynamic thermal model analyses and, most recently, been the Executive Editor for CIBSE TM59 “Overheating risk in dwellings - a design stage methodology”.

His work has revealed the extent and severity of summertime overheating in UK homes and spurred the Government to act to protect UK citizens from high summertime temperatures.
