JAMES WAHBE: Undergraduate Electrical Engineer, Goldfish & Bay / University of Technology Sydney

James' video submission addressed the question below.
You have been engaged as a high-level strategic consultant by your local council for a new
residential precinct. Explain why adopting circular design principles is important for these new buildings. Define “designing for circularity” in simple terms, and describe how building services like energy, water, ventilation, and lighting can help make buildings adaptable, reusable, and future-ready. Suggest practical ways to implement these ideas and outline the benefits for residents now and in the future.

ALICE MEACHER: Graduate Mechanical Engineer, Arup

Alice's video submission addressed the question:
Many building are typically designed to have a life of around 50 years or so, after which it is demolished and a new one is built from scratch in its place. This can be quite wasteful, especially when parts of certain building services systems may still have a decent remaining life if they were maintained well. What are some examples from your engineering specialty, and how can we mitigate such wastage? This could involve (but are not limited to) ways to extend life, ways to reuse, or changes in thinking/policies.

JACK PIRIE AWARD
Young Engineer of the Year 2026
LIAM KEARNS: Principal Mechanical Critical Systems Engineer, Cundall

Liam's video submission addresses the question: Select a current or typical project typology within your organisation and develop a strategy that embeds Circular Economy principles into its design, delivery, or operation. How does your proposal improve
whole-of-life performance and create lasting value for future generations?
