Design Philosophy

Giovanni’s approach is guided by a simple belief: great lighting choices shape better spaces, create stronger experiences and deliver smarter outcomes. He sees lighting not as something added to architecture at the end of the design process, but as a fundamental part of how people perceive, navigate and emotionally connect with a place. His work focuses on using light with purpose, supporting the architectural vision, strengthening identity and creating environments that are memorable, comfortable, responsible and human-centred.

As Managing Director, Giovanni oversees the full spectrum of SMITH TAIT’s operations, including design leadership, project delivery, quality assurance, business planning, sales, business development, commercial strategy, financial performance, recruitment and team development. He works closely with clients, architects, interior designers, landscape designers, developers, operators, engineers, consultants, manufacturers and specialist contractors to help projects progress with clarity, confidence and a strong sense of purpose.

His ability to connect creative ambition with commercial and operational realities enables him to navigate complex projects while keeping both clients and design teams focused on the wider vision. Whether establishing the design direction, steering business strategy, developing client relationships, resolving technical challenges or overseeing final implementation, Giovanni’s priority is to ensure that every decision adds genuine value to the project, the client and the people who will ultimately experience the completed environment.

Project Experience

Throughout his career, Giovanni has contributed to projects ranging from Saudi Arabian giga-projects and developments associated with NEOM Sindalah to signature hospitality, luxury residential, retail, commercial, educational and international design environments. His experience covers the complete project journey, from early concept development and lighting strategy through schematic and detailed design, specification, technical coordination, procurement support, implementation and post-contract review.

This broad experience allows him to understand a project from multiple perspectives. He can move between design intent, client expectations, technical requirements, commercial constraints and construction realities while maintaining focus on the quality of the final experience. His work is defined by the ability to combine visionary creativity with practical, technically robust and commercially responsible solutions.

Giovanni is particularly recognised for his approach to client relationships, his ability to resolve complex design challenges and his commitment to enhancing projects through intelligent and carefully considered lighting techniques. Rather than pursuing lighting purely as a visual effect, he focuses on achieving the right outcome for the architecture, the client, the end user and the long-term performance of the space.

The Role of Light

He believes that successful lighting design requires more than achieving numerical targets or selecting attractive luminaires. It requires an understanding of architecture, materials, people, atmosphere, identity, operation and context. It also requires close coordination and a willingness to protect the design intent throughout procurement and construction, when important decisions can significantly affect quality, performance and the final character of a project.

A central interest within Giovanni’s work is the psychological, emotional and biological influence of light. He continues to explore how thoughtfully designed lighting can support patient comfort and recovery in healthcare environments, influence performance and wellbeing in workplaces and learning environments, respond to the needs of animals such as racehorses, and create distinctive yet comfortable experiences within hospitality, residential and luxury settings.

This interest reflects his broader commitment to encouraging more meaningful conversations about the role of light within the built environment. Giovanni believes that lighting should be evaluated not only by how a space looks, but by how it makes people feel, how effectively it supports its purpose and how responsibly it performs over time.

For Giovanni, responsible lighting involves carefully balancing visual quality, energy consumption, maintainability, longevity, controls, product performance and the needs of the people using the space. Independence and Design Integrity

Giovanni is a strong advocate for the independence and integrity of the lighting design profession. He believes that independent consultants must be able to provide objective advice that protects the design intent and prioritises the interests of the client, the end user and the project. He is particularly interested in raising standards across technical specification, procurement, product substitution and post-contract delivery, where the quality of a carefully developed lighting concept can often be weakened.

His work promotes stronger technical evaluation, transparent product selection, meaningful compliance reviews and closer collaboration between designers, clients, architects, engineers, manufacturers and contractors. He believes the industry must move beyond decisions based solely on cost or familiarity and instead consider performance, quality, longevity, environmental impact and the experience of the people who will ultimately use the space.

Beyond his role at SMITH TAIT, Giovanni is an active contributor to the regional and international lighting and design community. He regularly participates in conferences, panel discussions, advisory boards, publications and professional events, sharing practical insight into architectural lighting, business leadership, project delivery, design quality and the future of the profession.

He has also served as a jury member for international lighting, design and hospitality awards, contributing his technical expertise, design judgment and commercial understanding to the recognition of innovative work within the industry. His involvement has included the Light Middle East Awards, FoodInSpace and a growing range of regional conferences, advisory boards and professional platforms.

Through these roles, Giovanni advocates for higher design standards, stronger collaboration, improved professional education and a more independent and transparent approach to lighting specification and delivery. He is particularly committed to creating opportunities for emerging designers and encouraging greater participation from younger professionals who will shape the future of the industry.

Giovanni believes that professional organisations have an important responsibility to connect people, share knowledge and represent the interests of the lighting community. Through his engagement with SLL MENA, he aims to support a more active, visible and influential professional network across the Middle East and North Africa.

His priorities include strengthening engagement with existing members, encouraging new participation, supporting educational programmes, creating opportunities for students and emerging designers, and developing stronger connections between practitioners, institutions, consultants, manufacturers and the wider built-environment community. He also believes that regional platforms should provide space for open discussion around standards, sustainability, professional responsibility, new technology and the practical realities of delivering lighting design in the Middle East and North Africa.

Recognition and Industry Leadership

Giovanni’s work and leadership have received growing regional recognition. He was included in the CID Power List 2025 and shortlisted for Executive of the Year – Consultancy at the CIBSE MENA Awards 2025. These distinctions, together with his increasing presence across industry publications, speaking platforms, judging panels and advisory roles, reflect the areas of his work that matter most to him: leading well, designing with intent, building strong professional relationships and helping elevate the conversation around light in the built environment.

Today, Giovanni continues to lead SMITH TAIT with a combination of strategic vision, creative ambition and practical responsibility. His focus remains on developing purposeful lighting solutions, strengthening teams, supporting clients through complex decisions and ensuring that design excellence is carried from the earliest idea through to final implementation.
