What You’ll Do
Be part of a team! contribute and be heard. Good teamwork is important for engineers and designers no matter what level of experience you may have.
- Help shape concept sketches into practical lighting schemes for internal and external spaces using a range of differing techniques.
- Contribute fresh ideas in mind map sessions to find creative, humancentric and sustainability-focused solutions.
- Be introduced to the basics of lighting-design software (Relux, DIALux, Adobe create suite, REVIT/enscape, hand sketching and more) which help us devise and create our concepts and designs.

Mode Lighting is a privately owned UK company specialising in the design and manufacture of lighting controls for the architectural, commercial, hospitality and residential sectors working in conjunction with lighting and interior designers to help create the right ambience in a space.
The work experience programme is being developed but will cover
- Business overview sessions looking at what a business does, what are it’s aims and how different disciplines come together to create a successful business. This may include time looking at Design, Technical, Manufacturing, Sales and Administration aspects of our business.
- Lighting Sessions : An introduction to lighting, why different lighting suits different applications, why the overall design matters and why sunlight, shading and the physiological effects of lighting all have an impact.
- Behind the Lighting: Looking at the control of lighting, what we do as Mode Lighting and how electronics, engineering and lighting come together.
- Group Task across the week: Develop an idea for a lighting product, review the application, research products that may already exist, look at the processes involved from design brief to boxed product and how external factors may influence the product from environmental impact, costs and marketing to designing for manufacture.

Nulty is offering a week-long work experience placement at its London studio, giving one student the chance to experience life behind the scenes at a leading lighting design consultancy.
During the placement, the student will be mentored by a senior member of the team who will introduce them to the profession of lighting design and the key skills involved in bringing architectural lighting design schemes to life. They will have the opportunity to shadow designers working on live projects and observe how ideas evolve through each stage of the design process.
By the end of the week, the student will have developed an understanding of how creative concepts are transformed into technical designs and gained an introduction to design tools such as CAD drawing, 3D modelling and photometric calculations.

SDA is a product design consultancy specialising in the design and development of luminaires for commercial lighting segment. SDA is involved in all aspects of a luminaires design, from initial concept through to detail design, prototype and product launch. SDA also undertakes the thermal design of heatsinks and optical design of reflectors and lenses.
There will also be the opportunity to learn about the use of 3D printing and plant polymers via a sister company called LumiAdd. LumiAdd specialises in the design and production of architectural luminaires utilising 3D printing as a manufacturing process and plant polymers as a material.
During this placement, the applicant will get a hands-on experience with the full design process of a commercial luminaire, primarily under the guidance of SDA but with additional exposure to advanced manufacturing techniques provided by LumiAdd.
The experience will begin with an introduction to the fundamentals of lighting and luminaire design, covering key areas such as luminaire types (commercial, decorative, and bespoke), application types (including office, retail, and industrial environments), and an overview of lamp technologies—from traditional to modern sources. The applicant will also gain insight into basic electronics, thermal management through heatsink design, optical control, and overall product design principles.
As part of the hands-on experience, the applicant will be introduced to prototyping techniques and small-scale manufacturing processes. At LumiAdd, they will learn how sustainable materials, such as plant-based polymers, are used in 3D printing to produce luminaire components in volume.
This placement offers a great opportunity to see how ideas become real products and to understand the different stages involved in designing and making modern lighting.

We are a small direct labour organisation within a local authority in South London. We are a completely in house team and carry out both the client, design and contractor function in regard to Street Lighting and Electric Vehicle infrastructure. We maintain over 18,000 street lighting columns and nearly 2000 Electric vehicle charge points.
As part of the 2 days, you will be introduced to how a Local Authority sets out its Lighting policy and strategy for the Borough and why it may tailor this to its local communities whilst still being compliant to British Standards. You will then work through designing a lighting scheme on a local road, using Lighting Reality and CAD to produce a design and drawing. We will talk about remote monitoring of the luminaires and spend a day with the operational team looking at basic electrical works and some of the Health & safety associated to working with electrics and on the Highway. We will also look to introduce you to EV Charging infrastructure and discuss the site selection process, logistical roll out and ongoing maintenance.
