Demand Reduction (DemRed) Tool

The Demand Reduction (DemRed) Tool has been created for members of the CIBSE Energy Performance Group (EPG) and CIBSE Young Energy Performance Group (YEPG).

The Demand Reduction (DemRed) Tool has been created to identify where to target energy demand reduction efforts. The tool is a simple spreadsheet, which can be downloaded and opened with either Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.  It has been designed for ease of use on desktops, tablets, and mobile phones.

To use the tool, download it from the link below, open it in either Excel or Sheets, 'enable editing', and view the first tab, Generic example and notes.

You may modify the generic example to suit your particular building or, if you prefer, you may start from scratch with the 'blank template' on the next tab.  There are also tabs with office and light industrial examples that can be tailored to your particular building.

This tool encourages a robust exploration of the effect of reducing kW load. This is via retrofit/replacement (for example, relamping existing light fittings or replacing HVAC pumps/fans) versus improved control measures for existing equipment to reduce overall 'hours run' as well as out-of-hours wastage.

Once you have tailored this to represent your building, you can run many different scenarios to gauge the likely impact on annual energy use. You may also use the tool over the course of several years, for example, to show the likely cumulative effect of proposed changes for years 1, 2 and 3 of a rolling improvement programme.

Demand reduction is the first step on the journey to zero carbon. The CIBSE Energy Performance Group (EPG) and CIBSE Young Energy Performance Group (YEPG) would like to thank John Field for the development of this DemRed Tool.
