The Domestic Heat Pump Design and Installation Guide is a cross-industry resource for anyone involved in the design and installation of domestic heat pump systems, including experienced designers, installers and heating engineers, plumbers moving into low-carbon heating, trainees, consultants and specifiers. Developed jointly by CIBSE and the HPA UK, the first edition of the guide provides a clear, independent and technically robust reference for monobloc air-to-water heat pump systems in new-build and retrofit homes. It takes a whole-system view, addressing the interplay between the heat pump, distribution pipework, emitters, controls and building fabric.

Designed to complement the CIBSE Domestic Heating Design Guide (2026), which provides heat-generator-neutral guidance focused on heat loss calculation and heating system design, the new guide extends this with heat pump-specific guidance across the full system lifecycle: survey, design, installation, commissioning and handover. Where possible, it simplifies complex design considerations and sets clear boundaries to help users recognise when a project falls outside its methodology and needs an alternative approach.
