MATES in Construction

Back to CIBSE ANZ home

MATES in Construction is a not for profit organisation established in 2008 by the construction industry to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers.

Every year, 190 Australians working in the construction industry take their own lives. This means a construction worker is lost every second day to suicide.

Young construction workers are 6 times more likely to die from suicide than workplace injury.
MATES in Construction delivers a number of training programs on site. These programs are aimed at:

· Raising awareness about suicide in the workplace

· Making it easy to access help

· Ensuring that the help offered is practical, professional and appropriate

The training falls into three categories: General Awareness Training (GAT) - 50 minutes, Connector - 4 hours, & ASIST - 2 days.

The program now operates in the Mining (MATES in Mining) and Energy (MATES in Energy) industries and there is a presence on sites in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia and Northern Territory.

24/7 free support can be given by phoning 1300 642 111 or more information can be found at www.matesinconstrucation.org.au.

Mates in Construction was CIBSE Australia’s charity of choice in 2018 with CIBSE pledging $1500 from proceeds from technical seminars to this worthy cause.
