CIBSE was delighted to welcome a delegation from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), including HKIE President Ir Prof Frank Chan, to its headquarters in London recently for a day focused on collaboration, knowledge sharing and the future of the engineering profession.

The visit provided an opportunity for representatives from CIBSE and HKIE to strengthen the relationship between the two institutions and exchange views on the opportunities and challenges facing engineers internationally.

As part of the visit, CIBSE hosted a President’s Talk Seminar, bringing together senior representatives from leading engineering organisations to share their perspectives, organisational priorities and plans, and to explore how greater collaboration and shared industry experience can help drive the profession forward.

The seminar brought together representatives from across the engineering community:

  • Kate Carpenter, President, Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT)

  • Sam Hubbard, President, Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)

  • Ruth Shilston, Trustee, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

  • Mike Burton, CIBSE 2026–27 President Elect

  • Ir Marsden Kong, Assistant Director, Hong Kong Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD)

  • Ir Prof Frank Chan, President, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE)

Each speaker provided an insight into their organisation’s priorities and plans, highlighting the breadth of expertise across the engineering profession and the importance of working collaboratively to address shared challenges.

The discussions reinforced the value of professional engineering institutions coming together to share experience, knowledge and best practice. With the built environment and wider engineering sectors facing increasingly complex challenges, collaboration across disciplines and borders is essential to developing solutions and supporting the next generation of engineers.

For CIBSE, the visit also highlighted the Institution’s strong international outlook and its commitment to building relationships with engineering organisations around the world. Through international collaboration and the exchange of expertise, professional institutions can help strengthen the engineering profession and contribute to a more sustainable, resilient and better-performing built environment.

CIBSE was pleased to welcome Ir Prof Frank Chan and the HKIE delegation to London and looks forward to continuing its close relationship with HKIE and exploring further opportunities for collaboration in the future.
