This course is delivered remotely over two half-days - mornings (10:00am to 1:00pm).

Advanced Simulation Modelling for Design for Performance is aimed at upskilling the Building Simulation community in the theoretical approach to simulation modelling when targeting an operational energy rating. The course will cover the following points:

  • An introduction to the NABERS UK rating tool and Design for Performance Project Agreements
  • An overview of the Guide to Design for Performance
  • The role of advanced simulation in targeting operational performance ratings
  • Principles in approach for modelling:
    • Building form
    • HVAC plant and systems: covering HVAC design, system control and system loads
    • Lighting
    • Equipment loads
    • Margins of error
    • Off-axis scenario analysis that demonstrate the resilience of building design
    • Metering specification

Learning Outcomes

Following the course, participants should come away with an understanding of the principles of why a client should want to target and model operational performance, the scope of works this should cover and how this should be applied in practice. It is not planned for this course to demonstrate how to use specific simulation software and will therefore be software platform agnostic.

The course will cover the following points:

  • An introduction to the NABERS UK rating tool and Design for Performance Project Agreements
  • An overview of the Guide to Design for Performance
  • The role of advanced simulation in targeting operational performance ratings
  • Principles in approach for modelling:

o Building form

o HVAC plant and systems: covering HVAC design, system control and system loads

o Lighting

o Equipment loads

o Margins of error

o Off-axis scenario analysis that demonstrate the resilience of building design

o Metering specification

Building service engineers, specifically targeting Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing and simulation consultants.

There will be an assessment after the course has taken place, showing you have successfully completed the training. The exam is hosted on our Online Learning Portal, there are 15 multiple choice questions. The exam is marked out of 15 and the pass mark is 70%. The time allowed is 30 minutes. Once your attendance on the course has been confirmed you will have access to the exam via your CIBSE Online Learning Portal under the tab ‘My Learning’.

Delegates are encouraged to take the test at the end of the course. The multiple-choice questions enable delegates to quickly check their recollection of the key issues and information presented by the course.
