Building Performance Champion

Awarded to the team, project or product making the most outstanding contribution and commitment to achieving improved building performance.

Winner: EY Centre, Sydney, Australia – Mirvac

EY’s new office in Sydney, Australia, showcases what can be done when a building is treated and delivered as a system.

In a very tightly contested category, the judges chose the George Street EY Centre, developed and constructed by Mirvac, as their Building Performance Champion 2019.

Sustainability and environmental performance objectives were a significant consideration in the delivery of the EY Centre. The development had to contribute to Mirvac’s commitment to become net positive by 2030, which is part of the company’s This Changes Everything strategy.

The achievement of ‘world leadership’ in environmental sustainable practices – recognised by the building’s three 6 Star Green Star ratings – reflects leadership and innovation. The design rating achieved an unprecedented nine out of 10 available innovation credits.

These ratings were achieved with a strong focus on engineering and operational efficiency and a commitment to learn from performance feedback, both in the development and operational phase of the building.

Mirvac made judicious use of technology to meet operational performance targets. For example, the building has an innovative closed cavity façade with an integrated blind system, and a fault detection and diagnosis package, which recognises control system anomalies and assists the building tuning process.

The health and wellbeing of tenants are a key priority with ample cycle parking and showers. The community is also involved through a community investment programme, which included monthly volunteer sessions and support programmes for the homeless and prisoners re-entering work, and an urban farm growing fresh vegetables.

The judges praised the truly holistic approach to building performance and wellbeing. And in being crowned overall champion, it has demonstrated the work of performance is more than just engineering.
