Show me the money! Getting the cost side of engineering right

Presentation Slides:

The NSW Chapter delivered another hot topic that few could afford (pun intended) to miss on Tuesday, 4th April.  It’s the age old debate, when a consulting engineer and quantity surveyor compare an opinion of cost for a project, these are often worlds apart.  Quite often engineers rely on guides like Rawlinson’s to estimate the costs of construction, but when was the last time you looked at what those rates are stated to include and exclude? By simply taking the rates provided at face value could be risky!

In the first of this evenings presentations, David Quincey, Associate Director of Engineering Services at WT Partnership (Cost Consultants) provided an insight into the quirks and pitfalls of this data, plus further guidance on improving the accuracy of services estimates. The chances are if you attended that it will change the way you estimate the costs of your designs forever!

Our second presenter, Craig Underwood, National Executive: Building Consultancy and Engineering at MBM, took us through the process from a building owner’s perspective. This included the steps you should take to ensure upgrade projects are properly budgeted for from the outset.  Craig went on to explain the key items to address when you are called upon to undertake a condition assessment or prepare an asset management plan, highlighted the key itsm to address in your report to make it genuinely useful.

From the interactive Q&A discussion afterwards, experience suggests that engineers often don’t understand how a building owner uses the information they provide when planning capital expenditure, and as a consequence vital things can be overlooked.

The evening closed after some fantastic networking drink, plus fabulous catering with the delegates including building services consultants, architects, quantity surveyors, facility managers and students alike.
The CIBSE NSW Chapter would like to thank our impeccable hosts, WT Consultancy for hosting the evening at their award winning offices in Sydney.

CIBSE NSW extends a big thank you to our sponsors Constructive for their appreciated and ongoing support throughout the year.
