SFE 2019 Annual General Meeting
A message from the Chairman
The Society of Façade Engineering 2019 AGM took place on Tuesday 2nd April at the Institute of Structural Engineers in London. The AGM looked back at over a year of intense society activities, as presented by the relevant committee chairs, and elected the new board for 2019-20.
The AGM was an opportunity to draw attention to the need for the façade engineering discipline to be recognised outside the façade network so as to be a more established specialism in the construction industry as a whole. This has been particularly important in the last 18 months, as the Grenfell Tower fire has brought terms like “façade” and “cladding” into the spotlight.
To this effect, the Society put a lot of effort into engaging with other disciplines, industries bodies, such as CIBSE, RIBA, IstructE and CWCT, and the Government. Moreover, we set-up a specific SFE fire committee to respond to the various calls for evidence and activities related to the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, to provide guidance for SFE members on the emerging issues and resulting regulatory changes. We are also part of the ongoing work on professional competence.
We wish to encourage all members to contribute to this work and respond to the various calls for evidence, either through the Society and its committees, or independently.
The SFE has nearly 1700 international members at various grades and we wish to encourage our students and affiliates to progress to full, corporate membership and enjoy free access to our technical evenings and exclusive documentation downloads.
Due to specific interest in the Manchester (U.K.) area and from Italy we are pleased to announce the start of specific SFE Manchester Region and SFE Italy and we are truly looking forward to working with these groups to support local activities.
The election of the new board took place during the event: David Watabiki (regions) and Graham Fairley (Secretary) have decided to step down and we would like to thank them both for their invaluable contributions to the Society in the past years.
The new Society of Façade Engineering Board can be found below and within the AGM presentation which is available for download here.
