Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research - September 2016

CIBSE WA Chapter members and guests were treated to site visit at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research at QEII on Tuesday evening. We were welcomed by Heiko Plange, Senior Philanthropy Advisor, for the Harry Perkins Institute and he gave us a very interesting introduction to the facility and the various areas of medical research currently being undertaken.

Following the introduction the group was split into two groups to be taken around the facility by Warren Smith and Steven Frost from Colliers International, who look after the facilities engineering systems. Warren and Steve took the groups through the plantrooms and back of house areas that support the facilities operations.

The building supports a number of speciality services and equipment, with MRI’s, Cryogenic Storage and Laboratory fume systems being utilised alongside the more traditional ventilation, electrical, hydraulic, security and communication services and the visit allowed the group to see how these systems are operated and maintained. On completion of the site visit a presentation was made to Jason Logan from CMS, who looks after the mechanical services works under contract to CMS at the facility. Jason is currently involved in fundraising for the MACA Ride to Conquer Cancer which raises funds the Perkins Institute for cancer research.

The photo above shows Jason (centre) receiving his jersey from Warren Smith (Colliers, right) and Peter Whalley (CIBSE WA Chapter Chair, left).

All in all a great evening, thanks to Heiko, Warren and Steven for their time and insight into a very interesting building.
