This paper describes how the new BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM 2011) measures, quantifies and reports on building performance against a range of key life cycle environmental impacts. The paper concentrates on the schemes coverage of operational energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of new, non-domestic buildings as this constitutes the biggest single change in the method from the previous 2008 version. The paper describes in stages how energy modelling of new building designs are translated in to BREEAM performance. It also describes how BRE has defined and calibrated BREEAM?s benchmark scale for energy performance and reduction of CO2 emissions in comparison with the 2010 version of the Building Regulations for the conservation of fuel and power in new buildings other than dwellings.
