18th and 19th April 2012

The SwitchOFF competition
The four week competition aimed to encourage all office occupants of one of the Arup buildings (8 Fitzroy St.) to switch off small power office equipment during meetings, lunch breaks, after work and at the weekends.

Arup already has a software tool that switches off computers after 7PM. This software has already saved a significant amount of energy, but in this competition we wanted to push the boundaries and investigate user behaviour by asking our occupants to “beat the machine” and switch off unused electric devices whenever possible.

The building has more than 1,000 occupants, who have been grouped in teams according to the electrical sub-metering topology of the building (6 levels and 3 small power sub-meters for each leve).
The competition has used cutting edge technologies and methodologies to share information and capture users’ attention.
