This training covers the electrical basics to give an understanding of electrical engineering. The course summarises the key aspects of electrical engineering in building services from generation to final circuits and provides clear, concise notes for future reference.

Attendees will have an understanding and appreciation of the complex nature of electrical building services and how to look after them, as well as guidance on the legal and required standards for managing electrical installations.

  • Principles of electricity and electrical short circuits - (electric shocks)
  • Methods of protection and electrical safety to people
  • Overview of short circuits, earth faults & selectivity between devices.
     Overview of the Key Electricity at Work Regulations and the IEE Wiring Regulations - BS 7671

  • Generators & Uninterruptible Supplies
  • Use of generators & uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS)
Session 3
  • Different types of cabling for Sub-Main Distribution, Lighting, Small Power and Fire Alarm systems
  • Lighting principles and different types
  • Emergency lighting principles
  • Simple lighting circuits and wiring diagrams
  • Fire Alarm Principles

  • Simple power circuits and wiring diagrams
  • Ring mains and radial circuits, their uses & application
  • Fuses & Circuit Breakers
  • What influences the sizing of conductors to ensure safety and reliability
  • Simple cable sizing.

An experienced Technical Manager with over 35 years in technical service delivery, coupled with a NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Heather has worked in technical consultancy as well as contract and operations management in facilities management. She is qualified for working in highly regulated environments such as MoD, Defra and NHS as well as pharmaceutical research and manufacturing. Heather is trained in all key areas of customer account and team management, including KAM, Customer Service Skills, Performance Coaching and Leading People through Change. Heather has been working in Training for 7 years and is currently MD of her own technical consultancy business providing facilities management and health and safety apps and software.
